In parallel, the food sector is also going through its own transformation, fuelled by new trends in consumption and, inevitably, the emergence of new technologies.
New technologies have also burst onto the sector through start-ups seeking to address consumers' concerns.
The multi-product or fine food sector enjoys distinct market positioning because of its added value. This entails higher quality, exclusive sales channels, sophisticated and distinctive packaging, and a unique story (origin, person, land).
Olive oil stands out in the fine food sector: it has its own council and therefore at Prodeca we handle it differently.
Industry
The fine food industry is one of the main agri-food sectors of Catalonia with an annual turnover of around €10 Bn, this figure surpasses 44% of turnover in the food and drinks industry.
Exports
The fine food sector is the second-largest agri-food exporting sector in both volume and value, which highlights the importance of the agri-food processing industry in Catalonia and its export capacity and potential.
With €4,2 Bn in exports, it accounts for 30% of total export value (2022). The olive oil sector represents 10% of Catalan agri-food exports, making it the third-largest exporting sector.
This sector has increased its exports year after year: in the last five years it has increased its sales in foreign trade by nearly 60% in volume and almost 100% in value. It is led by the following categories: sweets, cocoa and its preparations, confectionery, honey, coffee, tea, infusions (22.91%), snacks and appetizers, bakery and pastry products, cereal-based products, nuts, rice and legumes (20.76%), vegetable juices, waters, beers, drinks and liquids (20.68%), extracts, essences and concentrates, ingredients, soup preparations (14.37%), prepared dishes, broths, preserves, jams and jams (8.68%) and cheeses, dairy products and eggs (4.75%).

Catalonia increases its agri-food exports by 6.62% and exceeds €11,000 M for the first time
In 2020, Catalonia's food sector reached a new export record and exceeded €11,000 M in international sales for the first time. Compared to the data of 2019, they have increased by 6.62% in value and 6.95% in volume, becoming the only economic sector that grows in exports.

The Catalan agri-food sector saves nearly €70M in tariffs due to the Brexit agreement
The last-minute agreement between the United Kingdom and the EU saves the Catalan agri-food sector €69.34 million in tariffs and it is predicted that Catalan food exports to the United Kingdom may increase by around 9% in 2021.
