The halal sector
The halal diet is made up of halal foods. Broadly, for a food, product or service to be considered halal, it must conform to the laws of Islam as set down in the Qur'an, the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and the teachings of Islamic jurists. This means that they are fit for safe consumption. With regard to food, some of the most relevant requirements are:

- They must be free from any forbidden substance or ingredient.
- They must be made using appropriate utensils or machinery. They must not come into contact with a forbidden substance or product manufacturing, production, processing, storage or transportation.
- Permitted animals must be slaughtered without unnecessary suffering and according to the rules set down.
- In general, fish is halal.
- All preservatives, colourings, flavourings and additives must be halal.
- Animal feed must be of plant origin.
A growing potential market
In 2010, there were 1.6 billion Muslims all over the globe, representing 23% of the world's population. Islam is the second-largest religion in the world.
The Muslim population is expected to increase to around 2.8 billion by 2050, which would amount to 30% of the world's population. A full 62% of the Muslim population is concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region. The proportion of Muslims is expected to fall in countries such as Indonesia, India and Pakistan. This would put the region’s share of the world total at 53% by 2050. The Middle East & North Africa region (MENA) is predominantly Muslim and is predicted to remain stable at 20% of the world's population in 2050.
From 2012 to 2017, the value of Catalan agri-food exports to the MENA region increased by 21.51%. The value of Catalan agri-food exports to the destination with the highest percentage - the eurozone - accounted for 18.35% all exports. In the last 10 years, agri-food exports to MENA have risen by 236.54%, and by 49.74% to the eurozone. The value of exports has risen sharply in products such as meat, fruit and vegetables, cereals, coffee, tea, spices, fish, patisserie products, and beverages.
