Prodeca and Afrucat bring Catalan producers closer to the Indian market

During the second half of April, Prodeca, with the collaboration of ACCIÓ and by order of the sectorial association AFRUCAT, organizes a business meeting with importers, distributors and managers of large stores in India. In this action, a dozen Catalan fruit-producing companies associated with AFRUCAT will have the opportunity to present their products and the potential of the Catalan agri-food sector in direct virtual business meetings with face-to-face support and accompaniment at the destination.

In the context of the current pandemic and due to international mobility restrictions, from Prodeca we propose new commercial promotion strategies through the organization of online business meetings. To facilitate these meetings, Prodeca makes one available to Catalan companies and importers from India own digital tool to present their products and hold these interviews online.

India, a market with great potential

India is the 2nd world market with the most fruit consumption in 2020 with more than 112 million tons, just behind China with 113MT. Per capita consumption in 2020 was 83.2 kg/person and growth forecasts for the next 5 years are cumulative growth of 59% and positioning itself as the first world market in fruit consumption in 2023.

This increase is due, in part, to the greater availability of fruit in the market thanks to improved infrastructure, facilitating better storage and transport, which makes it a very attractive market for Catalan producers: India's fruit imports exceed 1.8 million tonnes for a value of almost €3,000 million.

Apples, critics and pears, the most demanded fruits

With 2.7MT consumed, apples are popular in India thanks to the fact that they tend to be available throughout the year and are affordable for the entire population. India is the 2nd market in world consumption of apples. A cumulative growth of 18.4% is estimated for the next 5 years.

Citrus fruits, mainly oranges and tangerines represent a consumption of 9.1 MT. Very low local production volumes favor imports. India is the 2nd market in world citrus consumption. A cumulative growth of 11% is estimated for the next 5 years.

the pears, with respect to the rest of the fruit, they have a rather low consumption of 0.31 million tons, however present one of the best cumulative growth forecasts in the next 5 years of 29.3%. India is the 6th market in world consumption of pears.

The peaches and nectarines, despite having a fairly low consumption of 0.12 MT, they are one of the better forecasts of cumulative growth in the next 5 years of 36.7%. India is the 16th market in world consumption of peaches and nectarines.
