The world of Catalan wine is self-organized in various associations and collective brands

As it could not be otherwise, the wine sector reproduces the trends of society and that is why Catalan wineries reflect the Catalan associationist tradition and organize themselves. In this way, they go one step further than the denominations of origin.

Therefore, several associations of wineries and collective brands have been appearing to achieve predetermined objectives or defend specific interests.

It is the case of corpinate, the most recent and which defines itself as "a Collective Brand of the European Union born with the desire to distinguish the great sparkling wines made in the heart of the Penedès, from 100% organic grapes harvested by hand and vinified entirely on the property".

The requirements to belong to this association are more demanding than those of DO Cava. In other words, any sparkling wine covered by the Corpinnat brand could be a Cava, but not all Cavas meet the requirements to be a Corpinnat.

There are currently nine processors integrated in Corpinnat, but they are open to all wineries that meet the requirements.

For reasons similar to the emergence of Corpinnat, the collective brand was created Classic Penedès which, under the umbrella of the DO Penedès, welcomes local sparkling wines that, by their own will or for other reasons, are not in the DO Cava. For example, to use an unauthorized grape variety in the production of cava. It differs from cava in that it admits some more grape varieties, and also requires a minimum aging time (15 months) longer than the nine months of basic cava. In addition, Clàssic Penedès must be made 100% with organic grapes. Currently, 17 wineries produce Clàssic Penedès.

Not all associations have bubbles

As an association that does not only host sparkling wine cellars, there are Celler Masia vineyard, a collective brand that protects the wines produced within the Catalan linguistic area by farmers from their own vineyards and in their own cellar, and that are marketed under their own brand. In other words, what usually corresponds to a traditional wine farm and which would be the equivalent of what in France they call "vigneron".

The aim is to dignify the value of the producer farmer and to differentiate his wineries and wines from those that are just marquises who buy grapes or wine from other producers and who do not make the wine in their own cellar.

On the other hand, Qalides is an association formed by 14 wineries within the wine-growing territory of the Vegueria Penedès, located in the counties of Alt and Baix Penedès, Garraf and Anoia. They are winegrowers and producers at the same time, who work to defend the history and landscape of the Penedès, practice ecological and sustainable viticulture, preserve the great wines of the Penedès and enhance their traditional varieties.

They share efforts in holding events, debates, presentations, tastings, to promote their wines and act as a pressure group, denouncing initiatives, often urban, that damage the landscape and agricultural territory, such as the expansion of industrial estates.

In the case of Land of Grenaches, the common link of the six wineries that make up the association is the passion for the Garnacha grape in its various variants: black, white, hairy and red Garnacha, and the wines that are made from it. They combine efforts and resources to publicize the excellence of this grape variety and to internationalize it, share stands at international fairs and exchange knowledge with each other or with universities and research centers. On International Grenache Day, they organize G-Night in Catalonia, a party with its wines.

They are five associations with apparently different objectives, but with a common destiny: to promote the quality and identity of Catalan wines in their various expressions.
