According to the EFSA, food is not a way of transmission of Covid-19

The European Agency for Food Safety (EFSA) has signed a statement in which it informs that there is no scientific evidence, until the moments, that food can be a way of transmission of the Coronavirus.

Although it appears that animals may initially be the source of infection in China, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, the virus is spread from person to person through droplets that are released when sneezing, coughing or exhaling.

The spread of Covid-19 is being studied by scientists and authorities around the world and so far they have not developed any reports that observe its transmission through food.

WHO to work on food safety, has published the following recommendations of hygiene measures when preparing and handling food:

• wash your hands
• cook the meat well
• do not cross cooking utensils of cooked food with uncooked food

Most of the EFSA team, which is based in Parma (Italy), one of the areas affected by the Italian Government's restrictions, works from home and coordinates teleconferences between experts and collaborators, replacing face-to-face meetings. For the time being, visits to the European Food Safety Agency and travel by its team have been suspended until April 8.

All these measures are constantly being revised pending the updates of the information that is received.

Outbreak information and risk assessments used by EU member states and the European Commission are continuously updated by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control. The World Health Organization is coordinating efforts globally.
