INFORMATION OF INTEREST ON EXPORTS TO THE JAPANESE MARKET
- Tariffs
-
As a result of the signing of the Japan - EU Agreement, which entered into force on February 1, 2019, both parties have revised their reciprocal tariff policies. Japan eliminated tariffs on wine, and applied a gradual reduction to products such as pork and beef.
You can consult the list of updated tariffs here - quotas
-
Some essential or strategic products are subject to import quotas to balance supply and demand. Annually, the government approves the volumes to be imported of these products, and assigns to importers the quantities allowed with low tariffs.
- Approved products
-
There are products that require prior approval for entry into Japan. In the case of meat products, the exporting company must be approved and included in the list of approved establishments. Approval is provided by the Ministry of Agriculture of Spain, after inspection.
- Phytosanitary regulations
-
For processed foods it is necessary to take into account that there are additives not allowed in Japan that do not match European regulations. The list of permitted additives can be found below link.
- Documentation required for export to the Japanese market
-
In addition to the commercial invoice and the packing list, to export any type of food product to Japan, you need:
- A complete list of ingredients, in order of highest to lowest quality of presence
- A flow chart, or similar, of the production process.
- For some products, such as wine, an analysis will need to be attached. The importer usually asks for all the necessary information. It is highly recommended to do the analyzes in a laboratory recognized by the Japanese government. They can be consulted in this link.
- Certificates: for example the Health Certificate for meat products, CITES for products related to protected species, etc. Likewise, the importer will always provide the necessary documentation.
- labeling
-
Japanese labeling regulations refer only to sale to the public. In principle, no labeling is required for import, nor for products intended for the food industry or catering. The importer will inform how the product should be labeled correctly.
Products intended for sale to the public must be labeled in Japanese, as established by the regulations, in terms of information, size, etc. The label is usually designed and provided by the importer. Often the importer himself is in charge of the labelling.
