SEMINAR PROGRAM

Meat Business Forum hosted a program of seminars on different regions with expert speakers. Attendees were able to learn about the figures, projections and trends in the Middle East, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa in the field of agri-food, both in terms of demand and distribution structure.

  • Provide first-hand information on the potential of emerging and strategic markets for the external expansion of the Catalan agri-food sector to the agri-food business community of Catalonia
  • Take advantage of the participation of buyers and experts in the event for an additional performance in the B2B program

THE MEAT SECTOR IN CATALONIA

The meat industry is the main agri-food sector in Catalonia, with turnover of €7 Bn. It represents 31% of turnover in the agri-food sector, 40% in employment and 18% in number of companies. This sector is increasingly focused on vertical integration as a way of ensuring traceability from farm to fork, in line with growing market demands. Every year Catalonia produces more than two million tonnes of meat of all species: pork, beef, mutton, goat, horse, poultry and rabbit.

The Catalan agri-food sector, driver o the Catalan economy

The agri-food sector generates €38.2 Bn turnover, equivalent to 16.28% of Catalonia’s GDP, and directly employs 164,372 people. This makes it the region’s largest sector of the economy.

It comprises 57,423 agricultural holdings, 3,922 food and drink industries, and 436 establishments in the agri-food auxiliary industry.

The meat sector is the largest processed food sub-sector representing 32% of turnover volume, followed by fine food (30%), vegetable oils (9%), wine (7%), fruit and vegetables (4%), cereals and mill grain products (2%), and fish and seafood (1%).

The food and drink industry in Catalonia accounts for 23% of the sector turnover in Spain.
