Marco Abella

The Marco Abella family has been making wine in the Priorat since the 15th century. Marco Abella are my grandfather's surnames. He moved to Barcelona at the end of the 19th century when phylloxera destroyed the Priorat's vineyards. In the late 1990s, my wife Olivia and I decided to cultivate some of our plots and to buy others from the family. In 2005 we decided to leave our jobs (I was a telecommunications engineer and my wife a lawyer) to start building up the winery and making wine.

Marco Abella currently owns 30 hectares of vineyards in Porrera, where we mainly grow the two autochtonous varieties Cariñena and Grenache. Our aim is to convey the authenticity, identity and essence of the town of Porrera using the environmentally friendly methods of organic farming and the latest biodynamic farming techniques. Our six plots (El Perer, La Mina, La Mallola, Masos d'en Ferran, Solanes and La Creu) are between 500 and 650 metres above sea level and are the highest in Porrera.

This microclimate bestows a very characteristic freshness on our wines, as well as finesse and elegance, hints of black and red fruits, flowers, and subtle mineral touches.
