Gastronomy has become a major strategic driver for both the present and the future, playing a key role in Catalonia's economy

The gastronomy sector

 

The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, through Prodeca, in coordination with the Regional Ministry of Enterprise and Knowledge through the Catalan Tourist Board, promotes the Gastronomy Plan. It provides a cross-cutting diagnosis of the main spheres as well as identifying the main challenges and future areas for action. The core aim of the Catalonia Gastronomy Plan is to contribute to promoting and consolidating Catalan cuisine and agri-food products nationally and internationally as a strategic sector and a key lever to drive the Catalan economy and society as a whole. 

In terms of diet, Catalonia is a healthy and sustainable nation that pursues innovation across the entire gastronomy sector and leverages dissemination of Catalonia's gastronomic heritage to boost the region's economy and culture.

Catalonia is the Spanish region with the most Michelin stars. Two of its restaurants have been number one and have featured seven times on the prestigious World's 50 Best Restaurants list.

Catalonia’s deeply-rooted culinary tradition, the variety and quality of its products, and the innovative creativity of its top restaurants have made it a gastronomic power that is internationally recognised at the highest level.

Gastronomy Plan

El Pla de Gastronomia, impulsat pel Departament d’Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació a través de Prodeca, coordinadament amb el Departament d’Empresa i Coneixement a través de l’Agencia Catalana de Turisme elabora, amb la col·laboració de més de 120 experts del sector, una diagnosi transversal dels seus principals àmbits així com una identificació dels principals reptes i línies d’actuació futures.

The Gastronomy Plan, promoted by the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food through Prodeca, in coordination with the Regional Ministry of Enterprise and Knowledge through the Catalan Tourist Board, in conjunction with over 120 sector experts, provides a cross-cutting diagnosis of the main areas as well as identifying the main challenges and future areas for action.

 “Chefs and products team up to show the international power of Catalan agri-food”

The aim of the CatalanFood campaign is to highlight the potential of Catalan land and products in the words of those best placed to do so - the chefs who use them. Each of the 13 celebrities talks about a Catalan agri-food product in individual videos lasting a minute each, while a group video lasting 5 minutes summarises the excellence of some of Catalonia's most exported and valued products.

The image shows a pantry of Catalonia, where various product categories stand out as a result of the highly diverse landscape and climate, and the video shows how this productive and industrial potential feeds one of the world's more powerful gastronomies. It is perhaps no surprise that Catalonia has the most Michelin stars in the peninsula with 52 restaurants that have been recognised by the French guide, far surpassing the 22 stars held in the Basque Country, which comes second.
